Retired high school art teacher, Johnna M. Ritchie has dabbled in all things art-related fromdrawing to painting, ceramics to sculpture, photography to mosaics, fibers and printmaking.

She has gained proficiency in various media so that she could assist her students in building their skills to aid their creativity. She has always been intrigued with fibers and until two years ago, had never tried rug hooking, a skill of her mother and her mother’s mother. She got hooked.

In rug hooking, she is mostly self-taught with the aid of published guides and encouragement from fellow hookers. Her hope is to use her years of artistic knowledge and drawing to help her translate portraits into realistic interpretations in the media of rug hooking. She uses hand-dyed, thrifted and purchased woven wool cut into very thin strips to create the form, line and value of the person’s face and features using small loops pulled through a linen fabric.

In her demonstration, she will show the evolution of her rug hooking development and theknowledge gained and current project(s) in progress.

Oct 5th

Oct 12th

Class Cost: CAG Members $240 for the six week series / Non-members $300 for the six week series

Location: ClearWater Arts Center & Studios – 223 Crowell Drive, NW, Concord, NC 28025. Greenway Gallery.  Enter from Kerr Street side of building, double doors lower level, by parking lot.

To Register: To register, send an email to Linda at  lindag6@icloud.com .  Registrations will be accepted through August 28th.

Payment Method:   Payment must be made at the time of registration using Venmo, Zelle or sending a check to Linda directly.  Payment info and mailing details will be provided via email.

Class: class size varies between 6 and 10 people, students must be 18 unless accompanied by an adult

We are excited to offer this opportunity for you to work with an outstanding instructor weekly over a six week period.  This will allow you to take the learnings, use them between classes and then get additional feedback to move forward.   In this workshop we will be designing paintings from the photographs you have chosen. We will not be copying them, but cropping, and rearranging elements to simplify and push our creativity. Let’s have fun, while taking some risks with color and design!

Please begin to gather clear photos of subjects that please you, such as flowers, architecture, landscapes, trees etc…whatever interests you.  It is a good idea to begin taking photos with your phones, or small cameras when you see an exciting pattern of light or shadows.  We will not be doing a lot of drawing so don't worry about your skill level in perspective.

Linda likes to begin the class with students gathered around. She will take each student in turn and talk about a photo they have chosen as subject on which they wish to work. Linda will show various approaches to the photos which helps the entire class garner new ways to look at their own work.

Linda will do demos as called for based on subject matter. She recommends that you wait to do any drawing or stretching of paper until the class.  This is an intermediate class.  We will begin immediately on design and will not focus on brushes, paint or paper.

Linda’s training in art began in Europe where she grew up as the daughter of an Army officer. It was there her love of architecture and travel began to develop. A Washington D.C. native, she achieved early success in oil painting in Virginia and New Jersey. Upon discovering watercolor, however, she realized her true medium. Her favorite subjects are regional architecture with bright, bold color transitions, usually including the addition of flowers and strong shadows. She enjoys painting large pieces that require the viewer to stand back!

Her corporate collectors include:

The Marriott Corporation, which owns 27 original paintings and The Industrial Research Center for Japan, Tokyo, which owns more than 26 original watercolors.

Linda lives in the Charlotte Metro area in North Carolina. She shows her work through galleries or by appointment in her studio. Linda teaches locally and also travels conducting workshops, in addition to tutoring by appointment in her studio.

Shown are a couple of examples of Linda’s work.  You can see more on her website at   lindagriffin.com

Oct 12th

Class Cost: CAG Members $240 for the six week series / Non-members $300 for the six week series

Ages 18 and up

Get ready for a free flowing fun workshop on August 19th to create a custom piece embellished with Resin Art. Mahnez, a popular instructor at CAG will be back in Aug to help you create a custom piece to decorate your home. The process is fun and every project will be unique. Class will begin with Mahnez explaining the resin process. We will then prep your piece. After that we will mix the resin adding pigment colors to match your décor. The fun starts with pouring the resin on your piece to make your design.

It is important to note that the resin requires 24 hours to cure but can be moved after 2 hours. You will be able to leave your piece to cure at the Clearwater Studio thru the weekend if you prefer. All materials outside of the piece to be decorated will be provided.

Suggestions for the piece to decorate:

1- Bring a piece of furniture (i.e. end table, side table or a piece that has a wooden top). You can cover the top with resin in any color you like.

2- Bring silicone molds for a resin pour. You can purchase resin molds at Amazon, Michael’s or hobby lobby stores. You can choose molds for coaster or a 10” round plate.

3- Tableware (i.e. a plate, a bowl that has been used and might have scratches on it, or a metal tray or platter). You can do a resin pour on across the bottom and give it a fresh new look.

Check my instagram page @aloranbyalora to see all the work I have done and help get your creativity flowing.

If you have questions and would like to discuss the best option for you please feel free to contact me.

This class is organized and presented by Cabarrus Art Guild, a ClearWater tenant. PLEASE SEE BELOW and follow instructions on how to register

Instructor: JJ Jiang

Date: July 15 (Saturday)

Time: 9 am – 4 pm

Class Cost – Grant Subsidized Pricing: $50 members, $85 non-members

Register (Pay by PayPal): Go to www.cabarrusartguild.org, select the Classes & Workshops tab

Register (Pay by check): Email classes.CAG@gmail.com for instructions

Class Size: Maximum 15 participants

Location: ClearWater Arts Center & Studios – 223 Crowell Drive, NW, Concord, NC 28025.

Enter from Kerr Street side of building, lower level.

With years of experience and numerous awards, we are pleased to announce that JJ Jiang will teach an advanced beginner/intermediate watercolor workshop for the Cabarrus Art Guild. CAG is able to offer this opportunity at subsidized pricing due to a grant from the Grassroots Arts Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, and the Cabarrus Arts Council.

JJ’s teaching is based on his belief that four fundamentals apply to all subject matter and even across mediums. JJ’s demos include clear instructions on these fundamentals: drawing, value, color, and edges. JJ will also discuss and demonstrate various techniques in watercolor, but he emphasizes the need for all artists to go beyond technique to explore the creative drive that has brought them to the easel.

In this one-day workshop, you’ll be using watercolors to create a beautiful landscape painting. After JJ’s step-by-step landscape demo, students will have the remainder of the class time to work on their own painting (from the photo reference provided) while JJ gives one-on-one instruction tailored to students’ individual levels. To wrap up, as time allows, JJ will have a brief critique and a question and answer session.

A list of supplies will be provided at registration.

Samples of JJ’s work.

JJ Jiang is an award-winning artist and a gifted instructor. He is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and a North Carolina Watercolor Society Master Member. Though accomplished in watercolor, he is a versatile artist - excelling in drawing, oils, and Chinese brush painting.
