Demo /Monthly Meeting Program:

SOUTHERN PIEDMONT WOODTURNERS

Invites you to an evening with:

Chip Scholz

Everybody likes a nice platter!”

Chip Scholz will be our demonstrator this month.  Chip is currently the president of the North Carolina Woodturners club in Hickory.  He has been turning for 10 years making a variety of items having studied from Mike Mahoney, Marty Libman, Kirk DeHeer and others.  He is currently turning on a Vicmarc VL 300 and a Laguna 1524.

For his demo he’ll be turning a platter from start to finish;

In Chip’s words we’ll learn:

                1.            Tool Technique: Discover the essential tools of the trade and master the techniques that make woodturning both an art and a skill. From selecting the right chisels to mastering the perfect grip, you’ll gain insights into how each tool shapes the wood.

                2.            Sourcing Materials: Learn about the various types of wood ideal for turning and how to select the perfect piece for your project. We’ll discuss the characteristics of different woods and where to find high-quality materials for your own woodturning endeavors.

                3.            Safety First: Safety is paramount in woodturning. We’ll cover the crucial safety measures you need to follow to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience. From proper attire to machine handling, you’ll leave with the knowledge to keep your workshop accident-free.

Demonstration Highlights:

                •             Turning a Platter:  Watch as a simple block of wood is transformed into a beautifully crafted platter. Each step of the process will be explained in detail, from mounting the wood on the lathe to the final finishing touches.

Whether you’re a seasoned woodworker or just starting out, the demo offers valuable insights and practical knowledge. You’ll leave inspired and equipped with the confidence to tackle your own woodturning projects.

Safe turning methods are taught and various turning days held for members monthly!

The Southern Piedmont Woodturners meet for fellowship and technical demonstrations on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm.  We meet at our studio (#122) at ClearWater Arts Center & Studios,  223 Crowell Drive NW, Concord, NC 28025.  Members begin to arrive for informal gathering around 5:30 pm; the meeting formally starts at 6:30 pm and the program is usually finished by 9:00 pm.

We usually have an "Instant Gallery" of members’ items they bring to demonstrate how previous demonstrators have influenced their work.  We also have a raffle of items to raise funds for the club.

In addition to ClearWater Arts Center & Studios, the SPW is associated with the Cabarrus County Arts Council (CCAC), the American Association of Woodturners (AAW), and the North Carolina Woodturners Association (NCWA).

To inquire about club activities, see the club website.  Or, you may call the ClearWater Arts Center and speak with ClearWater Coordinator, Sarah Gay at 704-920-6600 who can help direct your call.
