The Southern Piedmont Woodturners Association leases a large space here at ClearWater Artist Studios (Studio 122), and has about 65 local members. See their Artist Page on this site for images; and/or their own website for more info. The club meets every 3rd Tuesday evening and non-members are welcome to attend the first time for free.
Each Month's Featured Demonstrator description will be uploaded to this space, as soon as received from the SPW Club's scheduler for that month.
The demonstrator for the Southern Piedmont Woodturner’s (SPW) regular August meeting, Tuesday, August 21, will be Hayley Kozma. Hayley was awarded the Roland Hege Memorial Scholarship and attended a workshop in Architectural Turning, Beth Ireland – Instructor. The intent of this requirement of the scholarship award is to share the technical and artistic benefits of the courses attended by the recipients of the scholarship with the membership of the club. It also gives the recipient an opportunity to practice their presentation skills with an audience that is interested and supportive. We are excitedly awaiting this program. Please come and join us.
Note-- Official meet time starts at 6:30; but social hour starts at 5:30 so come early!
The SPW meets on the third Tuesday night of each month, except July, annual business meeting, and December, our annual Christmas celebration. Doors open at 5:30 pm as members begin to arrive for fellowship and sharing information. The monthly demonstration follows a short business meeting with announcements about future activities. During the half-time snack break there is a raffle and the sharing of new projects brought in by the members and guests, reviewed by one of our experienced turners to encourage discussion of techniques, etc. We also have a Turning Challenge of the Month, and a Turner of the Month brings a piece that is awarded to the winner of a drawing of all tickets from the raffle.
In an effort to give the members, interested guests and the general public, more of a hands-on experience with turning, our Board of Directors has planned several special events on 2nd Saturday (Clearwater Artist’s Studio Monthly Open House) and periodic week-end hands-on events. We are currently holding Tuesday Night Open Turnings to make special items for sale at the Cabarrus County Agricultural Fair, items to support Hospice of Cabarrus County, Beads of Courage bowls, and Christmas decorations as fund raising or direct contributions for community groups we support. Please come and enjoy our fellowship and help us support the community
