FOR TUESDAY, 2/19/2019: SOUTHERN PIEDMONT WOODTURNERS
Invites you to enjoy an evening with
Ric Erkes
“Green Bowl Dried, What Next?”
The February meeting of Southern Piedmont Woodturners (SPW) will feature one of our members and officers, Vice President Ric Erkes who has been turning for many years and has taught several classes. Ric has been an instructor at John C. Campbell Folk School and an assistant instructor at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
Ric recognizes we have enjoyed demonstrations that focused on turning green wood blanks and leaving them to dry before final turning. He now wants to teach and show what it takes to get a green, dried, rough turned bowl to a finished piece of art and to the shelf for display. He plans to discuss a variety of cuts that can be used to create a beautifully finished surface. He will discuss kinds of finishes, with their respective advantages and disadvantages, demonstrating at least one finish. Ric will also cover a variety of other situations (design opportunities) that a turner might be confronted with during the finishing process.
SPW meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at our studio located in Clearwater Artist Studios, 223 Crowell Dr., NW, Concord, NC. (corner of Crowell and Kerr St.) A social hour starts at 5:30 and the meeting convenes at 6:30 pm. During our break we will have snacks available, a raffle for wood turning related items and a presentation of our instant gallery of turnings by our members. We will also raffle off our Turner of the Month piece.
