Tom Taggart
Tom Taggart is a multi-faceted artist, best known perhaps for his unique, dimensionally illustrated covers to such books as D.C. Comics’ Batman, Swamp-Thing, Animal Man and Doom Patrol. Other clients include Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Topps, McFarlane Toys and Lucasfilm Arts. His work has been published in the pages of Spectrum, The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, and the Society of Illustrators Annual. His sculptures have been featured in various galleries across the country as well as abroad and even in the windows of Tiffany’s in New York.
Over the last 3 decades, Taggart has led a diverse career doing everything from illustration to toy fabrication to movie and theatrical set design and construction. He has even contributed some very larger than life sculptures to many mini-putt golf courses across the country.
These days Taggart works mostly as a fine artist, doing private commissions and gallery work. A recent transplant from Jersey, he now works in North Carolina, where he plans to make good use of his large studio space at ClearWater Arts Center & Studios, in Concord, NC to get back into much larger scale work.
We documented Tom’s quirky popularity, prolific output and a bit about his evolution in our article, “Every Day Is Halloween…” in the November 11, 2020 issue of The Splash, ClearWater’s e-newsletter, after an interview by ClearWater Coordinator, Sarah Gay.
